BackWeb Technologies Sues IBM and HP Over Patent Infringement
Published on Sep 25, 2010

BackWeb Technologies Ltd. filed lawsuits against International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), alleging patent infringement and seeking damages, an injunction and a declaration by the Court that the IBM and HP software update technologies infringe BackWeb’s patents.

BackWeb alleges that IBM’s Tivoli Provisioning Manager for Software product and IBM’s recently acquired BigFix products infringe four U.S. patents owned by BackWeb covering methods for transmitting information between a remote network and a local computer and distributed client-based data caching systems. BackWeb alleges that HP’s Client Automation product infringes three U.S. patents owned by BackWeb covering methods for transmitting information between a remote network and a local computer.

BackWeb’s patent portfolio has been broadly licensed by technology companies. BackWeb was a pioneer in Internet “push” communications technology, and since 1995 it has developed technology and products related to efficient Internet-based communication and notification which were sold to hundreds of customers and used by tens of millions of users. BackWeb research and development teams have developed multiple patented technologies in the field of efficient and user friendly data communications.
