Level 3 Communications, Inc. announced delivery of a significant phase within its Ethernet Expansion Program. As part of this initiative Level 3 will expand the number of Ethernet switches on its U.S. network by almost 400 percent. Level 3 also will make additional feature enhancements that will expand the company’s already comprehensive Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-certified Carrier Ethernet services portfolio.
”It’s encouraging to see that Level 3 is delivering on its promise to expand its Ethernet network and provide a comprehensive Ethernet solution that is a true competitive alternative,” said Stan Hubbard, senior analyst at Heavy Reading. “Ethernet is clearly the one-port solution for a wide range of business services, and Level 3’s commitment to the space demonstrates that they are building a platform for future growth.”
By expanding the switching footprint, Level 3 is eliminating the need for backhaul of switched metro Ethernet applications and also providing a more efficient backhaul mechanism for higher layer services, such as Internet or voice. Ultimately Level 3 customers benefit through enhanced network efficiency, scalability and flexibility.
Level 3 provides Ethernet connectivity in 22 countries and 190 major markets, and the company continues to aggressively expand its Ethernet capabilities and reach.***
