Who Will Benefit From Sybase- Aleri Marriage?
Published on Feb 05, 2010

The news that Sybase swallowed down Aleri, expert in complex event processing (CEP) aroused multiple discussions about the fate of both companies and CEP industry as a whole. Despite currently positive factors of this transaction the impacts of the merger seem uncertain.

Aleri`s portfolio will certainly add value to database technology leader, Sybase. Jeff Wootton, previously vice president at Aleri commented on the website that alignment of these two leaders is part of CEP market consolidation. Other benefits of the contract will enable Sybase to add OLAP capabilities to CEP and enrich Sybase RAP platform.

Possible effect on industry

Perspectives on the combined products that may appear in the future inspire great expectations. Complex event processing itself doesn’t represent a complete solution. As Tabb`s McPartland told in the interview to Wall Street & Technology- "CEP does have value. CEP is a tool and a means to an end. All of the CEP firms are well aware of that fact." In this focus the convergence of database support and real-time analytics may result in fruitful offer.

The merger brightly mirrors today technology market pacing towards consolidation and integration of everything and everywhere. The number of companies wishing software to encompass each problem of their business processes increase. But it doesn’t cover all without exception.

Possible effect on customers

Key competitor of Aleri – StreamBase- didn’t stay indifferent to the fact and reacted immediately with special Amnesty Program for Sybase-Aleri-Coral8 Customers launched yesterday. According to the vendor, this initiative will give eligible customers a one-time credit to migrate to StreamBase. The migration may be accomplished by registering interest in trading-in their existing Sybase, Aleri or Coral8 CEP platform for StreamBase.

StreamBase positions this program as hand of help to Aleri-Sybase marriage. Richard Tibbetts, CTO at StreamBase commented in the press release:

"It`s unlikely that Sybase will maintain 4 separate products. Aleri had 3 separate CEP product initiatives; Coral8, Aleri, plus OHIO, their ongoing project to merge Aleri and Coral8. Sybase`s CEP product RAP is yet a fourth code base. As a result, we`ve been approached by customers of all these products and asked to provide migration strategies to StreamBase."

In its turn Aleri also promises to provide migration path for all customers in the nearest future.

Omitting the doubts raised by this union one unconditional advantage is seen clearly. Industry of complex event processing increases in popularity and Aleri with Sybase may turn into those who will make CEP earth go round.
