Reporting Capabilities:
The analytical cycle for what Bill Gates would call “knowledge workers” is the same for most large provider groups across the country. When the knowledge worker needs information, they make a request to either an IT person or a “power user”. The technical intermediary then queries the transaction system or data warehouse or uses the BI tools in place. Depending on the importance of the requesting individual, or perhaps of the request itself, the information is delivered back in a few hours, a few days, a few weeks or a few months. The knowledge worker then takes the data, moves it into Excel, manipulates and formats it in an attempt to create insight, professionally visualized information, or both.

Workflow Capabilities:
If any part of the data request wasn’t translated properly, then the whole process starts over. If the knowledge worker wants to slightly modify the request, such as including or excluding a specific payer, provider or CPT Code, then the whole process starts over. If the knowledge worker believes the data delivered lacks believability and can’t possibly be correct, then the whole process starts over. This cycle has been so prevalent for so long on the business side of healthcare, that most organizations and knowledge workers alike don’t even appreciate how antiquated this approach is.
